Participate

Join us from April 3-9, 2022, for our 12th year of action!

________________________________

There are many ways to participate. Any action works!!

Given the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, here are five ideas for virtual participation in 2021:

  1. Go online to share stories and information about street harassment using the hashtag #StopStreetHarassment.
  2. Join Safecity’s campaign “Confidence is Beautiful.” They descibe this as “Confidence to walk down a street without worry, confidence to loiter in public spaces, confidence to travel further to explore work, leisure and more. But that cannot happen if streets are not safe. We need to spotlight the issue, create urgency to act and encourage men to take action.” Submit your quotes and pictures here.
  3. Share your experiences and stories with street harassment across the pandemic – and/or submit artwork to stopstreetharassment@gmail.com.
  4. Use chalk outside your home or pen/paper to write anti-harassment messages, take photos of the message and share the photos online, tagging @StopStHarassmnt, @pinthecreep and @catcallsofnyc. Here are message ideas.
  5. Take an online training about standing up to street harassers, produced by Hollaback! and L’Oreal Paris.

13 Ideas:

1. Share your street harassment story with someone. Share it online.

2. Go online to talk about street harassment using the hashtag #stopstreetharassment  — share street harassment stories, facts, and activism ideas across the day

3. Post about street harassment any time over the week on your blog, Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, etc. There are shareable images you can use in this online photo album.

4. Create a short video completing the phrase, “If street harassment didn’t exist, I would….” and post it online, tagging @StopStHarassmnt.

5. Spread no harassment, pro-respect messages with sidewalk chalk or mud, by posting or handing out flyers, or by standing in a group and holding signs in a busy area. Take photos and share them online.

6. Take an online training about standing up to street harassers, produced by Hollaback! and L’Oreal Paris.

7. Organize or attend an event, such as a self-defense class, a speak-out, or a workshop.  [Idea Guide] Here is a discussion guide, released in 2018.

8. Conduct a survey or host a community safety audit. [Idea Guide] You can even participate in an individual audit in 5 minutes using the free phone app Safetipin!

9. Organize public awareness campaigns (such as posting art work or fliers) [Arts Idea Guide]

10. Watch or show an anti-street harassment documentary or film

11. If you’re a teacher, educate students/youth about this topic. [Idea Guide] Ileana Jimenez (Feminist Teacher) writes about why it’s important to talk to students about street harassment. One easy idea: Show students the award-winning four-minute film “Walking Home” and use the Discussion Guide, created by the filmmaker Nuala Cabral.

12. Write and submit an op-ed.

13. The Philadelphia-based group Pussy Division has stencil patterns you can download and use to post anti-harassment messages on sidewalks in your community.
